USPTO Announces Severe Cuts in Plans Due to Funding Issues

USPTO Director David Kappos announced on Friday, April 22, that the Patent and Trademark Office will have to reduce its activities in light of the recent budget decisions by Congress. In brief, here are the changes:

  • “Track one” procedure to expedite applications, set to start May 4, 2011,  is suspended;
  • Establishment of a Detroit satellite office is suspended;
  • Hiring is frozen;
  • IT plans are scaled back;
  • PCT outsourcing is reduced;
  • Employee training is reduced; and
  • All overtime is suspended.
